The Nathan Peter Levinson Foundation is a religious community foundation.
Our aim is to provide academically high-quality and transparent training for liberal and conservative rabbis and cantors.
The students are our focus.
We strengthen the Jewish community in Germany and the local Jewish communities with the sustainable training of Jewish clergy.
The establishment of the Nathan Peter Levinson Foundation is a consistent new beginning in rabbinical and cantorial training in Germany.
It is in line with the tradition of passing on the Torah and Jewish traditions over thousands of years.
Our namesake is the German rabbi and scientist Nathan Peter Levinson (1921-2016).
His century-long life stands like no other for the fate of German-Jewish history, for catastrophic breaks as well as continuities after the Shoah.
The Conservative (Masorti) rabbinical seminary is named after the rabbi and religious philosopher Abraham J. Heschel (1907-1972). He serves as a role model for the theoretically and practically sound training of Conservative rabbis.
Louis Lewandowski (1821-1894) gave his name to the seminary for cantor training. As a link between tradition and modernity, he still plays a very special role today, bringing together conservative and liberal cantors.
The foundation is to become an affiliated institute of the University of Potsdam and work closely with the School of Jewish Theology and Jewish Studies at the University of Potsdam.
The training process at the three Levinson Foundation seminars is scheduled to begin in October 2024.
Further specific information on our offers will follow shortly.
The unique liturgy Jewish tradition offers for Rosh ha-Shanah and Yom Kippur (New-Year-Day and the Day of Atonement) provides us with an opportunity to dwell into our hearts and souls, to revisit our human and Jewish being.
It calls us to seek within our soul deeper faith, higher convictions, brave spiritual moves; ones to which we might not dare entering in other moments of our life.
Gathering as communities to experience these yearly moments has potentiality of a renewal; of an opening of new horizons; of committing oneself to the betterment and healing of personal, social, and human and environments; of assuming the highest responsibility for God's world.
May the beginning of the new year, in times of distress and agony, war and violence, will lead us to spread around hope and faith, peace and justice, love and solidarity. Le-shana tove nikatev ve-nechatem.
Dear Friends, In this time of new beginnings, the Abraham Joshua Heschel Seminary is pleased to extend its greetings to the Jewish community.
As we raise up new leaders who will improve the quality of Jewish life to meet the challenges of our time, we celebrate the world's birthday with the message that we are not held captive by the past.
Indeed, we are always being renewed in goodness.
May this spirit of newness, confidence and faith inspire us to new successes in building a better future as we now welcome the New Year.
