This course is an introduction to the practical work in Jewish communities as prayer leaders. The course focuses on the history of congregations in Germany, and the various legal forms of “KdöR” and “e.V.” We will see how the prayer books reflect the Minhag haMakom and the social changes since the end of the World War II. The course also examines the different dynamics of working with a congregation and relates the various options of the Kley Kodesh to these.
In this course, the students get learn how to distinguish and sing in the respective Nussach, they will do first improvisation exercises on the text, practice recognition motifs and learn how to use them in the service.
At the end of the semester, two-week block seminars on selected key topics take place in cooperation with other seminaries of the Levinson Foundation.
